Lot N. 252

Importante Raccolta di Incisioni

The volume is an important collection of engravings that includes the book Antiquarium statuarum urbis Romae, dedicated to Count Francesco Calcagni and published by Giovanni Battista Rossi in Piazza Navona. Rossi’s book is the first systematic collection of illustrations of sculptures found in Roman collections and is based on the work of the draftsman Giovanni Battista Cavallieri (c. 1525–1601). The engravings depict some of the most important statues in the collections in Rome and also include effigies of famous men and women, among them a portrait of Michelangelo Buonarroti. The first three full-page engravings also indicate the engraver, Io. Bapt.am De Rubeis in P. Agon (Piazza Navona).

The volume is the result of a later rebinding, with a parchment cover and gold title on the spine, measuring 387 x 246 mm, most likely commissioned by the owning family, probably in the 18th century. It contains 88 pages of engravings. The condition is good, with only a few spots of humidity and some pages with reinforced margins.
