Lot N. 292
L’instruction du Roy en l’exercice de Monter a Cheval par Messire Antoine de Pluvinel son soubs Gouverneur, Conseiller en son Conseil d’Estat [..]
Printed in Paris in 1628 by Pierre Rocolet, in the gallery at the Palais, aux Armes de la Ville, dedicated to the King.
Folio volume, contemporary rigid vellum binding, in excellent condition, except for the beginning of a detachment of the frontispiece, which bears a double-page engraving printed in Paris at the expense of Crispin de Pas the Elder of Utrecht. The frontispiece depicts Strength and Science, surmounted by the royal coat of arms.
A printer’s device appears on the title page, and on the third page there is an engraved portrait of the author. The volume is further enriched with decorative headpieces, initial capitals, and full-page engravings. There is a light period restoration reinforcing the third full-page engraving; the image itself remains intact.
Complete volume, with only a few very small humidity stains. The text describes a method considered excellent for training horses and the best way to ride them. The illustrative apparatus includes detailed depictions of men and their actions in the training of horses, as well as illustrations of bridles and riding schools.
A rare edition of considerable collector’s interest; a copy is recorded in the collection of the Louvre.
