Lot N. 238

La perfezione del Cavallo Libri Tre di Francesco Liberati Romano

Printed in Rome in 1639 by the heirs of Francesco Corbelletti, with a dedication to Paolo Giordano II, Duke of Bracciano.

Quarter-folio volume, lacking the vellum binding; some pages have torn margins, the binding is in need of restoration, and there are humidity stains.

This is the complete first edition, including the numerous illustrations of brands and coats of arms of horse breeds. At the end of these illustrations there is a full-page engraving, probably serving as a printer’s device. The volume features fine decorative initials.

The first page bears the coat of arms of the Duke of Bracciano, along with several finely executed treatises and decorative initials. The volume also contains Xenophon’s “Art of Horsemanship.”
