Lot N. 310

Jules Verne - Les Enfants du Capitaine Grant (Edizione Hetzel)

A highly charming copy of “Les Enfants du Capitaine Grant” (The Children of Captain Grant), one of the most celebrated titles in Jules Verne’s Voyages Extraordinaires series. The volume was published by the Bibliothèque d’Éducation et de Récréation of J. Hetzel, Verne’s historic publisher in Paris.

The work is richly illustrated with 172 vignettes drawn by Riou and engraved by Pannemaker, which helped to create the universal visual imagination associated with Verne’s adventures.

Physical characteristics:

Title page: Features the typical double-page layout with an illustrated frontispiece depicting a sailing ship amid the waves and a globe, accompanied by the full title and the publisher’s details (18, Rue Jacob, Paris).

Illustrations: Numerous wood-engraved illustrations within the text and full-page, including decorative headpieces and circular vignettes portraying the protagonists at key moments of the journey.

Language: French (original text).

Condition:
The volume shows good internal preservation of both the illustrated plates and the text. The paper displays the natural patina of age, with light foxing that does not affect the quality of the engravings.
