Lot N. 245

Importante Documento Ducale Veneziano (XVII-XVIII Secolo), Gran Dux

An important historical-diplomatic document of the Most Serene Republic of Venice. It is an official manuscript (likely a “Commissione Ducale” or a feudal investiture) issued by Doge Silvestro Valier (Doge from 1694 to 1700).

The document, written in elegant script on parchment, features a heading with large gold initials and title: “SILVESTER VALERIO DEI GRA DUX VENETIARUM ET C.” The text concerns the inheritance of Marquis Filippo Rangoni as recognition of the fief and privileges granted to the noble Rangoni family.

Exceptional Features:

The manuscript bears lead seals certifying its origin from Doge Silvestro Valier. The lead seals are attached to the document with silk and gold cords.

The first seal depicts Doge Silvestro Valier kneeling before Saint Mark.

The second seal belongs to Doge Giovanni Cornaro (IOANNES CORNELIO DEI GRA DUX VENETAR), indicating a confirmation or extension of the act at a later date (1709–1722).

Binding:
Magnificent contemporary red leather binding with gilt maroquinage, featuring an oval central panel typical of high-quality Venetian bindings intended for senior state offices.

Technical Details:

Period: Late 17th – early 18th century

Subject: Republic of Venice – Rangoni Family

Condition:
Better than good. The presence of intact seals with their original cords makes this lot extremely rare in the antiquarian market.
