Printed in Venice by Gabriel Giolito de’ Ferrari in 1570, dedicated to the Duke of Parma, Ottavio Farnese.
Quarter-folio volume, limp vellum binding with a label added by a former owner indicating the author, title, and year of the edition.
The volume deals with the training, conduct, and knowledge required of a true soldier and noble knight for the practice of military arts. It is composed of four books in one. The first page features a fine decorative headpiece and printer’s device, with initials and a fine engraving on the eighth page depicting a knight. In the second book, some pages include printed notes by the author.
Throughout the volume there are several graphic examples of troop formations in battle: the second book includes an engraving showing an example of army encampment; the third book contains drawings of defensive systems; and the fourth book presents illustrations of cannon placements for defense. The fourth book also indicates a different date and printer—Venice 1569, Giovan Griffio—different from the imprint on the first book.
Overall in good condition, with some humidity stains, handwritten annotations on the first and last pages and on the inside of the third and fourth covers, and rare wormholes in the frontispiece.
