Lot N. 270

Encomio della pazzia

Author: Erasmo da Rotterdam (Desiderius Erasmus, original Latin title Moriae Encomium or Stultiae Laus)

Printed in Basel in 1761, “at the expense of Wisdom.”

Octavo-folio volume, rigid leather binding with gilt lettering on the spine. In good condition, with only a few small humidity stains. A fine copper engraving is present as a frontispiece, and a printer’s device appears beneath the title on the first page.

This edition is in French with facing Italian translation (translated by Nicolas Gueudeville). It is a satirical work, originally published in 1511, critiquing society and political power of the time through the personification of Folly (Moria), who delivers praise of herself. The curious and significant indication “at the expense of Wisdom” underscores the satirical nature of the work.

At the end of the translator’s preface, Nicolas Gueudeville provides a simple yet delightful conclusion to the text. Volume in excellent condition, complete.
