Historical note: Floriani served Philip III in Madrid before entering the service of Archduke Leopold, for whom he worked on many fortifications, including those of Brisach and Vienna. Later he worked for the Barberini in Rome and Ferrara. The volume deals with fortifications, the ways to construct them, and the machines used in their construction.
